The iconic Fulton House building on Swansea University’s Singleton Park Campus is to be redeveloped and refurbished with the announcement of a major investment project to restore the historic building as a vibrant social hub, reflecting its original purpose when opened in 1961.
The ambitious project will strengthen the University’s reputation for student experience excellence by transforming the former College House into a welcoming, accessible, focal point at the heart of the campus for our community. It will house student focused facilities, dedicated social spaces and offer a gateway to key student services.
The project will reinvigorate the Sir Percy Thomas designed, Grade II listed building, celebrating its history and heritage, restoring key architectural features, whilst enhancing its unique character, with modern upgrades that remain in keeping with the mid-century design.
Sustainability is a key principle of this £34m project, which will retrofit the existing building, reducing waste and drastically minimising embodied carbon and energy compared to a demolition and new build approach.
The project aims to achieve a SKA Fit Out Gold Rating and will utilise ethical, responsible, and local materials, incorporating biophilic elements and improving connectivity to outdoor spaces, whilst upgrading building services and resolving long-term maintenance issues.
Through a process of extensive consultation, architects Austin-Smith:Lord have developed concept designs and students and staff will be invited to have their say to help shape the redevelopment of this iconic building.
Swansea University’s Registrar and Chief Operating Officer, Niamh Lamond said: “I am delighted to announce this project which forms part of a long-term programme of investment into the Singleton Park Campus, which includes masterplanning activity, further building upgrades, investment into critical infrastructure, enhancements to the outdoor environment, and further development to support the University’s zero carbon commitments.”
The phased programme of renovation is due to commence in early 2025, with a target completion date of Autumn 2026.
